This reads like a dry history lesson compared to the richness of Steven Saylor’s Roma Sub Rosa series. But that is my only quibble with this book. That just shows, however, that not much is really known about many of these characters – ones whose faces never appeared on coins or in frescos. It was a nice diversion from the traditional “military” historical fiction that I’ve been reading – stories focusing on armies and generals and soldiers. Archived from the original on February 24, That bit when Roberts introduces the forensics aspect of it with Asklepiodes and his wounds study helped that feeling along. A good thing, if so, as I do like him. Decius feels Roman, while still being sympathetic to moderns.

Shelve The Catiline Conspiracy. Roberts has studied the historical sources, and does a good job of fitting his fictional embellishments into the known events. Lists with This Book. Thanks for telling us about the problem. He lives with his wife in Estancia, New Mexico. Cicero is treated with more respect, but his weaknesses are clearly outlined. Not certain why Blackstone has re-recorded with John Lee; although I haven’t listened to Simon Vance’s recording, I imagine it’s as good as Lee’s fine version.
Marcus Ager was another freeman who used to fight under the name of Sinistrus. If you’re a history buff and love all things late Roman Republic, this is a most excellent read, as Bill or Ted might describe it. The detective is Decius Caecillius Metellus, who starts out as a young man whose family is a powerful force in the Senate. In the time of Crassus and Pompey, murder and intrigue are not that uncommon.
I just didn’t care much for it. No trivia or quizzes yet. Maybe I wasn’t in the john maddox roberts spqr mood, or maybe it just wasn’t very good Instead, the story ends with a less satisfying ending for Metellus and, frankly, a probably much more realistic ending.
I uohn the book; it painted Ancient Rome vividly and wonderfully. This is a series of detective novels set in masdox late Republic. That wouldn’t be terrible if I had a slew of suspects, but I felt the plot was too strongly foreshadowed. You are a subscriber but you have not yet set up your account for premium online access.
